Is There Truth To The Suzuki Trail Bike Project?

Suzuki has not confirmed the existence of a trail bike project but it has been reported that the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer is working on a trail bike based on the popular GSX-R150. Once the project is confirmed it means that Suzuki will be competing with Honda CRF 150 and Kawasaki KLX 150 in the global market.

Indonesian website Iwanbanaran has published photographs of the new trail bike that is said to be part of patent images for official clearance. Based on the images released by the website, the new trail bike includes off-road friendly features like long travel suspension and dual sport tyres. The upcoming Suzuki trail bike will have a high raised exhaust for more ground clearance with disc brakes at both ends, LED lights, Suzuki Easy Start system, keyless control and digital instrumentation.

Power will be provided through a 147cc, single cylinder, liquid-cooled DOHC engine that is currently being used on the GSX-R150 that was officially launched last November 2016. The mill develops 18.6 brake horsepower (BHP) at 10,500 rpm and 14 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm. This can be found in the GSX-R150 but will be re-tuned for trail use.

In the 70’s and 80’s there was Suzuki TS 250R Savage and this new trail bike will be the successor in the global market. However, the launching of the new trail bike is not going to happen in India even with the growing interest for off-road bikes. Suzuki may bring the trail bike to India at a later stage. Meanwhile the adventure bike segment of India is expecting Honda XRE 300 as an affordable option but it will compete with Royal Enfield Himalayan that boasts of a 411 cc engine. Hero Impulse used to be the most affordable adventure bike but it was discontinued.
